*THUMBS UP* YOU LIKE THIS

If you fear the internet as the first stop on an evolutionary train of technology that can only end with Skynet and the destruction of humanity, you might not be aware of this… Those of you who have embraced the internet and all of its wonders, however, probably discovered at some point over the weekend that Navy football is now officially represented on Facebook. I’m not talking about the Navy Athletics Facebook page that’s been around for a little while now, or some fan page dedicated to the Mids; I mean an official Navy football page, complete with some video clips from practice and status updates from coaches. Before you know it, Buddy Green will be asking you to join him in Mafia Wars and you’ll be taking a “What member of the Navy coaching staff are you” quiz.

Like everything else on the internet, this will be pretty cool up until the point when the wrong people get a hold of it and ruin it for everyone else. Can you imagine if this had been around the last couple of years? And what it’ll turn into?

Anyway, I don’t think that the new Facebook page is THAT big of a deal. What I really find interesting is how this contrasts with the Air Force Lack Of Information Proclamation issued last month. To me, the Facebook page is sort of emblematic of the apparent difference in philosophy between the two athletic departments when it comes to accessibility and dealing with the media. One is clamping down, while the other is constantly seeking new ways to get additional exposure. This isn’t a criticism of what Air Force is doing; it’s just an observation. But with newspapers in turmoil across the country, and sports pages being among the hardest hit, you’d think that this would be the time to open the doors a bit.

I love the fact that our practices are open to the public. It is an interesting contrast to when we were terrible with closed practices. I think PJ stated in a few pressers that there probably isn’t too much intel anyone can get on our team by watching the practices anyway – other than maybe who may not be playing due to injury, but that’ll pretty much be known before gametime anyway.

We do what we do and there isn’t anything significant that’ll be learned watching practices that can’t be learned from game films. Other than the occasional trick play which we don’t do that often anyway.

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKIN’ ABOUT?! THIS IS A PIECE OF WORK, NOT A WORK OF ART!!
WHERE IS THE CREATIVITY AND ORIGINALITY? ALL HE DID WAS TOSS AROUND SOME INGENIOUS QUOTES OF OUR GOMIDS SITE AND THEN ACCEPTS CREDIT FOR USING THEM.
I’M GOING BACK TO THE GOMIDS BOARD-CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION!

  4. This post is dangerous to nasal passages and keyboards. I do think you missed a golden opportunity to include some posts from troy calhoun whose pic would naturally be…KAHHHHHN. His is the superior intellect!

It was messed up when ( or soon thereafter ) you wrote it, now it is back to “normal”. Third time reading it and it’s still funny.

  6. ELLIOTT

    Comedy genius.

The open-ness of information regarding Navy football is certainly something to be proud of. Well done team.

From my own personal experience, it seems that Scott and the team deserve a big pat on the back!

    Cheers Guys.

you were lurking as a flamer on a rival’s board when I met you
I picked you up, I called you Phat, gave you an account,
    turned you into someone new;
now 5 years later on you’ve got the web at your feet,
    the blog has come so easy for you;
but don’t forget it’s me who gave you 40,000 posts,
and I can still ban you, too

Don’t you want me, Bird Dog? Don’t you want me, OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

David, no offense, but have you actually tried to have a discussion over there? It’s embarrassing…I’m ashamed that alumni would sit there and trash OSU over graduation rates and such. That site is nothing like the one I joined a few years ago. I was saying two years ago the new posters sucked (especially the ones that came in during PJ’s last year)…they ruined that board in less than two years.

GoMids is the perfect example of the difference between having an education and being educated.

  9. GoalieLax,

The site got more popular and when you expand the fan base, you are always going to get good and bad results. It is inevitable.

I just keep everything in perspective. I don’t get too worked up over what people post. However, the site has established some credibility with NAAA and if I can help reign-in the garbage you speak of with actual facts, I try to do that.

Compared to other fan sites, GoMids.com is definitely several notches above due to the good work by USNA86.

  10. You’re confusing the site and the message board. I’m pretty sure the latter has no credibility with anyone, which is probably the case with just about any fan board. That board isn’t notches above anything, and there’s nothing that 86 can do about it. All he can do is make sure people behave; he can’t generate all the content. That comes from the posters, and they are terrible (with a couple exceptions).

  11. KoutetsuKaigun

I do not think that Mike was trashing USNA86 or the site, just those members who lack sufficient mental capacity to converse in a logical manner.

  12. GoalieLax

yeah, I was def referring to the message board…I love the articles and info the GoMids writers contribute. they have certainly gotten better in the last couple of years.

my beef is with the board’s posters and that’s it

  13. Posters89

WHAT? ONLY 30 POSTS! WE’LL NEVER BE ANY GOOD AGAIN! WHERE’S THE TRIPLE DIGITS? DAGNABBIT AND SON OF A BISCUIT! BLOGGERS HAVE FIGURED US OUT!

    Phew that felt good!

  14. EightyFiver

Some of the GoMids posters put out good info; some make me laugh; and a few seem to think they know it all and tend to annoy. It’s a bit of a microcosm of the fan base.

On the whole, I’m glad the board exists. Many of us live nowhere close to Annapolis and find no Navy info in our local papers. It’s a good source of info (often taken with the appropriate grain of salt). I can’t go watch a practice, but I thoroughly enjoy the comments of those who have the time to show up and report what they’ve seen.

Got to agree on the bickering w/ OSU fans re graduation rates. Total waste of time and a bit classless.

  15. tphuey

Agree with EightyFiver. The people who played the “my school is smarter than your school” card need to get a hobby or something.

Mike, I love your stuff. Keep it coming! I must admit, though, that I fell asleep during you GT Podcast guest appearance. :)

  16. 1776Rover

    Tremendous Mike!

As to GoMids, I appreciate the time and effort put in by USNA86 to maintain, manage and when necessary police the board. For years I was seperated from knowing what was going on back east, especially with Navy Football, so I regularly read now and enjoy the discussions, banter, and information.
