On the Veterans Classic and Navy Basketball

Well, I’m officially an “old grad.”

I came to this realization as I took my seat in Alumni Hall to watch Temple and North Carolina warm up before game one of the Veterans Classic. We had some fun events on the yard when I was a mid, I guess, with the usual slate of concerts and such. There was an advanced screening of Apollo 13 hosted by Jim Lovell himself that was pretty cool. We certainly had good basketball; Navy was the class of the Patriot League. But we never had anything like the Veterans Classic.

Does AAC stand for “American Access-bowl Conference”?

That was a good Tuesday for Navy Football.

ICYMI, the College Football Playoff Committee released the first set of rankings, which included American Athletic Conference members Memphis at #13, Temple at #22 and Houston at #25. With the only other “Group of Five” team in the rankings being then-undefeated Toledo at #24, a very clear path is drawn up for the AAC champion to be the highest ranked G5 champion and get the resultant Peach / Fiesta Bowl bid.

Troy Calhoun Is Bad for Service Academy Football and Needs to Go

Air Force opened their season with a 63-7 win over Morgan State. The following day, head coach Troy Calhoun said this:

As with most things that Calhoun says on Twitter, it was somewhat random. His reaction to a season-opening win was to warn against moving a home game to a neutral site? That’s out of left field, even for Calhoun.

Division I Football and The “Right” Reasons to Come to the Naval Academy

It’s a bye week for the Navy football team, which means that some of us have a bit more free time to take care of the things we’ve been neglecting on our weekends. Maybe you need a haircut. Perhaps the neighbors have started to make comments about the wildebeests migrating to that Serengeti plain that used to be your lawn. For the blog, the lack of a game to preview means that I have a chance to write about something else. I don’t really like taking requests, but after receiving a couple of e-mails about this blog post at the Naval Institute, I’m willing to make an exception.
